This stunning figurative painting by polish artist Emilii Wilk depicts a semi-nude woman wrapped around a blanket staring at something, and drinking from a cup. The style of the painting is realistic. Initially, I assumed it was an idealized painting. But as I observed more, I noticed that the woman's hair is messy and short, she looks quite tired and it sort of appears like she just woke up and it looks very un idealistic. In "Ways of Seeing", By John Berger he states, "To be naked is to be oneself. To be nude is to be seen naked by others and yet not recognized for oneself." Berger is expressing the distinctions between the words naked and nude. In this painting, the woman is not far from being completely nude. Supposing that the blanket weren't there, she would be nude.

  1. First- why only 140 words?? Second- where did you find this artwork? Third- I think what Berger is saying about nude vs. naked is totally exemplified in this work- is she "herself "naked" or is she "nude" for the viewer?
