I'm the type of person that finds meaning and beauty in most things, so when Art & Society began I had high expectations because I believed I was going to be trained to identify and describe the aesthetic value in all that we encounter in the world everyday. I was correct. Although I was interested in art from the beginning I knew it could potentially be three or so hours of successful naps every week if the professor chose to cover dry material. Dahlia is as far as one can possibly get from dull or dry. Her appreciation and passion for art at times had an infectious quality that boosted my appreciation for art and as a result I find myself using words like "monochromatic" to describe the color scheme in a room or a painting. Cracks in the sidewalk no longer break my mother's back now, if you look close enough you can see a pattern that can tell an entirely different old wives tale. I may not take another art course in my entire life as far as art history is concerned but I’m definitely interested in learning the technical aspects that go along with creating my own art in and for society. Seeing art in society is seeing art in people so in effect Art & Society may have taught me how to be a better human. And if all else fails, if I learn how to draw that’s a spectacular way to get out the dog house. Just draw your girlfriend in her favorite outfit, doing her favorite things with her favorite people. Send it to her in the mail with flowers and voila, she just went from 100% mad all the way down to 95%. Art & Society.
I’d have like to cover the technical aspects of creating art in addition to all we learned about art history and describing art. A few basic drawing lessons is all one needs to begin drawing on their own and that should beget a stronger investment in the class and should bring forth higher grades for the students. The museum trips were greatly appreciated because sitting for three hours in a classroom will drain the life out of you, it doesn’t matter how much appreciation for art or society. The blog was also greatly appreciated because to some degree it didn’t feel like homework in the traditional sense, so I feel students have been more inclined to do it. We spend hours on the computer blogging in some way as it is. There isn’t much I can offer about changing the class, it was about as successful as I could have possibly imagined and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
