Blog Post 9&10

                Art and Society changed the way I perceive art immensely compared to when I was in high school. Before I took this class I wasn't as interested in museums and I definitely wouldn't stop to observe works of art. I didn't understand the aesthetic value or appreciate art for what it truly is. I was also unfamiliar with abstract and representational works of art. Now I can name several talented artists that create mainly abstract art such as Wassily Kandinsky and Georgia O' Keefe. This class exposed me to all types of art from great artists such as Pablo Picasso, photography by Carrie Mae Weems and graffiti art by Daze and Lady Pink. Now I understand why people enjoy visiting museums and purchase expensive works of art. I didn’t expect to enjoy this class as much as I do now because I didn’t really like art to begin with. But looking back at the first papers I’ve written, I realized I’ve grown to genuinely like paintings and admire them now. I also express myself better using art terms that I’ve never known before when I’m describing a painting or a sculpture. When I’m out and about somewhere I catch myself observing things carefully, almost as if I were a photographer.

         In this class we covered several interesting topics but one that really interested me was graffiti art. I really enjoyed visiting the museum in Harlem and I really got to learn about urban culture in New York. When we were watching the graffiti film in class, I was very curious to learn about it because some people don’t consider graffiti as art so it’s a controversial topic. Visiting all of the museums was a wonderful experience considering that it was my first time going to some of them and it really opened me up to different styles of art. I also learned from the accidental art activity, it changed the way I look at everything now. When I’m out walking somewhere I stop and observe sidewalks or the gloomy sky. This activity shown me that you can find art anywhere you go, all you need is to pay attention more and not disregard everything you see. Overall art and society helped me grow as a person and I thoroughly enjoyed taking this class.
